A native of Florida, Carruthers has long been a resident of the Lone Star State and has played a vital role in the development and preparation of many scientific payloads carried aboard spacecraft, including the space shuttle, International Space Station and SpaceX's Dragon. As a private pilot, he has also been a part of many aviation events in and around Houston and has an impressive photographic portfolio to his credit, which can be seen here.
